With VLC 3.0, videos can be displayed on your TV using Google’s small media box. The operation is very simple.
The new version 3.0 of the famous multimedia player has a new function that allows videos to be broadcast on a Chromecast, Google’s little box that plugs into a TV. The following steps are valid with the standard or Ultra version of the device and relate to the Windows version of VLC.
Check that the Chromecast is operational
If you have any doubts about activating your Chromecast, just launch the Google Home app on your Android smartphone and tap the “devices” icon at the top right. The Chromecast should appear. The other possibility is to use the YouTube app and tap on the broadcast icon, in the shape of a rectangle, located at the top, next to the name.

Stream your video with VLC 3.0
- Launch VLC 3.0 on your PC or double-click in the file explorer on a video associated with VLC. To open a video from the media player, click the menu Media at the top of the screen, then Open a file. This allows you to verify that the video is playing correctly on the computer.

- To start casting on the Chromecast, click on the menu Reading, then on Rendering in the list of functions. Select the Chromecast from the list of available devices.

- The operation is similar in macOS but you have to choose Render in the menu Reading.

For the Chromecast to be available, the PC must be connected to the same Wi-Fi network. The fluidity of the broadcast will depend on the characteristics of the video, the power of the computer and the speed of the Wi-Fi network. Indeed, it is the PC which acts as a streaming server and may even have to convert the video before broadcasting it. We recommend that you have a machine with a dedicated graphics circuit for the best results.
