Smart locks are smart locks that bring your home a little closer the house of the future bring. Xiaomi makes its variant of the smart lock a bit smarter again by adding a function that the competition only dreams of.
What is a smart lock?
A smart lock or smart lock wants to make the conventional lock on your front door, including the keys, superfluous. Electronics are used for this. Examples are a PIN code that you enter on a wireless keypad, a fingerprint scanner on the lock or an app on your smartphone. A smart lock can also have extra functions such as being able to open the door remotely or let people who have a key in at certain times, such as the cleaning lady.
There are now several manufacturers that offer such a smart lock, such as Nuki, Bold and the Dutch LOQED. You can read all about smart locks on Androidworld here. The latest manufacturer in this segment is Xiaomi. This manufacturer has a smart lock with the somewhat unappealing name Xiaomi Face Recognition Smart Door Lock X announced. This lock recognizes the face of the homeowner and then opens the door.
Xiaomi’s smart lock with facial recognition
The smart lock uses 3D facial recognition and, according to Xiaomi, is the “highest level of facial recognition security”. You don’t have to do anything when you walk up to the door, as it opens immediately as soon as your face is recognized.
I wrote earlier that the confidence in a smart lock to open the door is just a bridge too far for many. A smart lock that works with facial recognition will certainly not make the switch any easier. We already know that this form of security on smartphones is not always reliable and can easily be circumvented with a photo, for example. 3D facial recognition, on the other hand, is a more advanced form of security and may work better.
The lock uses an ultrasonic sensor for facial recognition that can detect when someone is at your door. If that person lingers at your door for too long, it can even notify you through the Mijia app. The smart lock also contains several other ways to open the door in case the facial recognition does not work.
The lock also has an AMOLED screen, a built-in 6,250 mAh battery that should last you quite a while and works with Mijia and Homekit. There is no mention of support for Google Home. The smart lock can be ordered from 12 October. The price and availability are not yet known.
