Use Siri by typing instead of talking on iPhone, iPad or Mac

Siri is extremely easy to use, but many people also find it annoying to talk to their iPhone, iPad or Mac. Fortunately, it is also possible to use the voice assistant by typing instead of speaking.

The option cannot be found in the Siri settings, but can be accessed via the accessibility options. Unfortunately there is one disadvantage, you have to make a choice. It is not possible to type commands and questions as well as ask them using speech.

Type questions to Siri

If you prefer not to speak out loud, such as during a meeting or in a quiet environment such as the train, you can also simply type your questions to Siri. Thanks to software update 26, it’s now easier than ever, without having to adjust your settings. In addition to the option to use Siri with speech, you can now also type questions. Follow the steps below to type questions to Siri.

  • Unlock your iPhone or iPad
  • Double-tap the bottom of the screen
  • Then type your question

Is it not possible to ask Siri questions this way using typing? Then you still have to activate the function via Institutions â–¸ Apple Intelligence and Siri â–¸ Talk and write to Siri â–¸ enable the option ‘Type questions to Siri‘ in.

Typing with Siri on a Mac

On a Mac you can easily do this by activating Siri via the menu bar or launchpad. Then click on the Siri field and then type your question. Do you want quickly type a question? Then press twice in succession command⌘-test

Don’t want to use this typing function? Then you can disable this via Settings â–¸ Apple Intelligence and Siri â–¸ Talk to and write to Siri â–¸ disable the ‘Type questions to Siri’ option.

Always use Siri while typing (archive)

Do you have iOS 18 or earlier? Then you can follow the steps below to use Siri by typing instead of speaking. This allows you to always ask your questions by typing. As of software update 26, it’s no longer possible to set this permanently, so you’ll need to follow the steps above to start typing with Siri.

  • Open Settings
  • Tap ‘Accessibility’
  • Open the ‘Siri’ option
  • Turn on Type Questions to Siri

Do you still have iOS 11 or 12? Then you will find the accessibility options under the ‘General menu’.

By pressing and holding the home or side button you can activate Siri and immediately have the option to type your question or command. Siri will reply in the usual way.

Activate typing questions to Siri on a Mac

Under macOS Sequoia or earlier, you can also type your questions to Siri instead of speech. You can activate this via  â–¸ System Preferences â–¸ Accessibility â–¸ Siri â–¸ Enable the option ‘Enable ‘Type questions for Siri’. As soon as you activate Siri you can type your question or command.
