Google is in the process of deploying the new RCS communication protocol on Android. Here’s how to activate and configure it.
France and the United Kingdom are the first two countries in which Google plans to launch RCS Chat, a communication protocol aimed at replacing SMS.
Thanks to it, Android users will be able to enjoy enriched conversations similar to a Chat, passing directly through the Internet connection, landline or mobile, of the device, as for example iMessage does on iOS.
To take advantage of this new functionality, you will need to download and install the Google Messages application on your smartphone if you haven’t already done so.
If you want to take advantage of it, then you will have to stop using your default SMS application in favor of Messages. In principle, you will not lose any conversations, the Google Messages application taking care of their transfer automatically.
As this new feature is being rolled out, it may not be immediately available on your device.
1. Install Messages
If you are not using the default Messages app, first install the latest version of the app on your smartphone.

2. Activate Chat
When you open Message for the first time, the application may display an alert indicating the possibility of activating this new function. If this is your case, press the I agree button.

If no alert is displayed, you can check if RCS Chat is available on your device by going to Message Settings.
To do this, open the main menu, represented by three small dots at the top right, and press Settings.
If Chat is available, it should be displayed first in the settings list, under the Chat Features heading.

3. Enter your number
In the menu dedicated to the Chat function, check the Enable chat functions option.
Messages invites you to enter your phone number, which is essential to activate the function. After entering the number, press Continue.

The app should initiate your phone number to connect to the service. The Status line should read Connected when the connection process has completed successfully.

4. Customize your preferences
With the Chat feature, your interlocutors will be able to see on the screen when you are entering text or when you have read their message.
To preserve your privacy, you can deactivate these two features by unchecking the Send read receipts and Show input indicators options.

The deployment of the Chat function in Messages being in progress, the application may display the dedicated menu but not immediately allow you to register and validate your mobile number.
If this is your case, be patient and wait a few hours before trying your luck again.
