The latest update of Google Chrome inaugurates an enriched omnibox, displaying images with suggestions entered in the address bar. Here’s how to get rid of it.
You have probably noticed, since the update of Google Chrome 75, that the address bar in which you enter the URLs for your searches (also called omnibox), displays images next to certain requests. This is, for example, the case when you type the name of a personality, a movie, a video game, a program, etc.
While these images are relevant and can save you time, such as quickly identifying a person, for example, they are not essential and may annoy some users. Fortunately, it is possible to deactivate them, by digging a little into the hidden functions of Google Chrome.
1. Display the flags
First step, display the Chrome flags panel. For those who do not know what flags are, these are experimental functions, present in Chrome, but not officially activated.
You can access the page dedicated to all the flags of Google Chrome by entering chrome: // flags in the omnibox.
2. Look for the flag
In the search box grafted to the top of the Chrome flags page, search for omnibox rich entity suggestions.
3. Disable the flag
Click on the Default drop-down menu displayed on the right, and choose Disabled, to disable the function. Then restart the browser by clicking on the Relaunch Now button.
You will be able to verify that the modification of your preferences has been taken into account by entering the same request, which should end with the absence of an image in the displayed suggestions.
