Google is rolling out the dark theme of its messaging app to smartphones running Android 10.
One of the big novelties of Android 10 is the inauguration of a dark theme in the system settings. When activated, it turns Android interface elements and menus from white to black. Beyond offering a more aesthetic rendering, this should allow owners of smartphones equipped with an OLED screen to save some energy.
The fashion for dark interfaces has recently spread to many applications, such as Slack or Facebook Messenger, which include in their respective settings, an option to activate this theme.
But what’s new with Android 10 is that the dark theme applied to the system can also be applied automatically to other apps. However, these must be compatible with the function. Some, like Google Photos, automatically adopt the theme used by default on the system. Others, like Google Calendar or YouTube, require manual activation in their respective settings.
Gmail is in this case and therefore requires manual activation of the dark theme from its settings.

1. Go to Settings
Open Gmail on your smartphone, deploy the main menu and go to the Settings of the application.
2. Activate the dark theme
Then enter the General settings of the application. At the top of the list of options, enter the Theme menu, and select Dark Mode.
If you are already using the dark theme on Android, choose System Default Theme.
The rollout of this new feature is, as of this writing, still ongoing. Therefore, it may not yet be available on your device.
If the menu is not available in the Gmail settings, wait a few days and try again.
