Microchips are of course not only found in passenger cars, but also in commercial vehicles. There is a worldwide shortage of microchips and so the commercial vehicle sector is also affected. ACEA, the European association for car manufacturers, makes this clear.
According to ACEA, 118,903 new light commercial vehicles were sold in the European Union in September, excluding trucks. Those nearly 119,000 company cars form a huge queue when you put them side by side, but they are 13.6 percent less than in the same month last year.
Measured over the first three quarters of this year, sales of commercial vehicles in Europe are still higher than last year in the same period. In the first nine months of this year, almost 1.2 million new commercial vehicles were registered in the European Union, 18.7 percent more than in the same period in 2020.
According to ACEA, 4,879 new delivery vans were registered in the Netherlands in September, 8.2 percent less than in September last year. In the first three quarters of this year, 52,981 new commercial vehicles were registered in our country, 15.9 percent more than in the same period last year.
