Don’t like the large kidney grille of the X7? Then you will probably not like the facelifted version. Almost the entire front of BMW’s largest SUV will soon be overhauled, as this new set of spy photos proves.

BMW’s 2018 GLS competitor is ready for what the men and women in Bavaria refer to as a Life Cycle Impulse (LCI). So a facelift. BMW is not exactly known for implementing major design updates on its models, but for the facelifted X7 the brand has a completely new front on the shelves.

Although BMW does not seem to change the hefty size of the kidney grille, everything around is new. The X7 gets lighting spread over two floors as you know from crossovers and SUVs from Hyundai, Kia and Nissan. That new layered front does not appear out of thin air. BMW’s new flagship, the 7-series, will have such a front, which means that at least some of BMW’s models will follow that design style. The back of this test sample, which was caught near the Nürburgring, does not seem to hide any major changes.

Any more news on X7 front? Sure, indirectly. The X7 will eventually be joined by a version with a more steeply sloping roofline. That car will be called X8 or maybe XM. BMW can more or less justify that last name by saying that the SUV is always a sporty M model. So no spring balls for the new XM.
