Skoda releases the design of a new compact sedan with two design sketches. It is a car that basically shares its technology with models such as the Fabia and Scala, but do not immediately pull the wallet.
The segment of cars like the Skoda Fabia has lost a lot of diversity in recent decades. Where years ago manufacturers in that class had station wagons and even sedans on the menu in addition to hatchbacks, today the range consists solely of five-door hatchbacks. Also Skoda has not had a Fabia Sedan for years and the brand new Fabia is no longer a Combi. Nevertheless, Skoda comes with a new, relatively compact sedan, a car of which the Czechs are now releasing the appearance.
Unfortunately: the Skoda Slavia on these design sketches does not enrich the Dutch range. The Slavia is named after the bikes that Skoda founders Václav Laurin and Václav Klement sold before turning to cars. It is a four-door that Skoda is only marketing in India. The car will be on the MQB-A0-IN platform, a cheaper version of the platform that is under cars such as the Skoda Fabia, Volkswagen Polo, Seat Ibiza and Audi A1.
The Slavia probably serves in India as a successor to the Rapid that Skoda sells there. That Indian Rapid is actually a Skoda variant of the Indian Volkswagen Vento, and that is in fact another Polo Sedan of the previous generation. The Rapid is now quite old and so this Slavia is more than welcome. It also seems very likely that the Slavia will be Skoda’s version of the just under 4.5 meter long Volkswagen Virtus, a sedan presented in 2017 that will be delivered in South America and which you should actually see as a Polo Sedan. In any case, count on a spacious trunk, the Virtus swallows up 521 liters and that is more than decent for a sedan of this size.
