The new version of Apple’s mobile OS finally offers users the possibility to change their default web browser.
The iOS 14 update which is about to land on the iPhone offers many new features. While it was already possible to use a third-party browser, Apple did not allow links to be opened from third-party applications in a browser other than Safari. With iOS 14, users can now configure a default web browser other than Safari.
In order to exploit this novelty, developers of third-party browsers had to update their application so that it could be used by default instead of Safari. Here’s how to change the default web browser used on your iPhone.
1. Open Settings
Start by opening iOS Settings. Then scroll through all the displayed options to access the options of the applications installed on your iPhone. Locate your web browser – for this demonstration, Chrome – and enter the detailed settings of the application.
- Download Google Chrome for iPhone (Free)
- Download Microsoft Edge for iPhone (Free)
- Download Firefox for iPhone (Free)
- Download Brave for iPhone (Free)
- Download DuckDuckGo for iPhone (Free)

2. Change the default browser
In Chrome settings, enter App from the default browser, and change Safari to Chrome.

Then close iOS Settings, and open an application where you can click web page URLs.
If everything went correctly, the link you clicked should no longer open in Safari, but directly in Google Chrome. The first time you open a link in a third-party app, it should ask you for permission to open Chrome.
