Zero Motorcycles, the Tesla of motorcycles, launches major innovations for the new year. Highlights for 2022 include a significantly improved battery capacity and groundbreaking new software. On top of that, one of Zero’s longest-running models, the SR, is getting a major update.
The upgraded power sources, featuring an updated design and architecture, will be available in two standard capacities of 14.4+ kWh and 15.6+ kWh. The plus sign indicates that each of the packages can optionally be expanded to 17.3 kWh. The 2022 Zero SR/S will be available in both battery configurations. The SR/F will only be available with the 15.6+ kWh setup.
In addition, one of Zero’s longest-running models, the SR, is getting a major update to include the 14.4+ option. Combining the new battery with the optional Power Tank (available in the first quarter of 2022) maximizes the battery pack for a total capacity of just under 21 kWh. That’s good for a range of 365 km in the city or 182 km at 113 km/h. In other words, the capacity of the battery pack increases by (maximum) 20%. Moreover, the ecological impact of manufacturing the battery pack does not grow.
“As a defining brand of electric motorcycles, we have a responsibility to take great strides in all areas. We should not just build on repetitive improvements. Range, and therefore battery capacity, is a fundamental anchor for a better driving experience. In addition, it stimulates the transition to electric motorcycling. Therefore, our main focus has been to implement this new standard in our 2022 lineup.”
Zero riders can unlock the extra capacity of these new batteries through another industry first: the Cypher Store. This on-demand marketplace is powered by Cypher III+, the latest version of Zero’s operating system Cypher. Cypher III+ is installed by default on the 2022 SR/F, SR/S and SR.
Through the Cypher Store, owners can access upgrades that improve the performance of their engine in a variety of ways. The various options can be accessed through the Zero Motorcycles smartphone application or online at www.zeromotorcycles.com/cypherstore.
The options associated with this launch include faster charging (Faster Charging), extended range, a speed and performance boost (Speed & Performance Boost), parking mode (Park Mode), heated grips and navigation via the display (On-Dash Navigation).
All of these improvements can be added to the 2022 SR/F, SR/S and SR. Some upgrades can also be retroactively activated on previous model years SR/F and SR/S with dealer assistance.
“The ability to personalize your bike on demand is nothing short of revolutionary in the powersport industry. We make it possible to immediately adjust the performance just using a Wi-Fi signal. That profoundly changes the interpretation of how Zero bikes can grow and evolve with the rider.”
The new battery technology and the launch of the Cypher Store are the highlights in a long list of improvements to the 2022 SR. This model, the original electric street bike, is one of Zero’s most successful and longest running models. The 2022 model year version is packed with improvements and built around the signature external steel trellis frame. The 2022 SR shares the high-performance DNA of Zero’s most premium models but at a more affordable price.
“The SR is known as the motorcycle that defined the electric naked street category. It is therefore only logical that we are introducing all these new technologies on this model. With the implementation of this rich array of never-before-seen features, the SR becomes the most customizable motorcycle ever. In this way he ensures his prominent place for the coming years.”
The 2022 SR shares the same celebrated platform as its premium sibling, the SR/F. For example, the SR is equipped with the renowned ZF 75-10 power source as standard. On this model, that is good for 166 Nm of torque, 75 hp and a top speed of 167 km/h. The brand new Cypher III+ operating system manages the technology on the 2022 SR. Activating the Speed & Performance Boost via the new Cypher Store unlocks the full qualities of the motorcycle and also includes Advanced Bosch Motorcycle Stability Control. This improves the ABS capacity, traction control and torque control in corners.
The standard ZF 14.4 kWh+ battery pack on the SR can also be increased to 17.3 kWh via the Cypher Store. When you also add the optional Power Tank, available from early 2022, the battery capacity increases to 20.9 kWh. That’s the largest capacity ever aboard a Zero. Furthermore, the SR can now also use the public EV charging network thanks to the Mennekes (Type II) connector. Zero Motorcycles also offers Wall Outlet Adapters (Type II to wall plug) for charging the battery at home, at work or anywhere a normal wall outlet is available.
The 2022 SR will appear in the Graphite livery at a price starting at €19,150 in Belgium and the Netherlands and will now be distributed worldwide to Zero Motorcycles dealers. Driver’s license A is required to drive the 2022 SR.
The standard version of the 2022 SR/S, equipped with the 14.4+ kWh battery pack, will cost €21,900 in Belgium and the Netherlands. The premium version with 15.6+ kWh battery pack is available from €24,140 in both countries. Zero offers the model in two colorways: Aileron-Black and Cerulean Metallic-Silver.
The premium 2022 SR/F comes in two colorways (Asphalt-Metallic Silver and Red-Coral) with the 15.6+ kWh battery pack. The price is €23,380 in BE and NL. There is no standard version of the SR/F.
