The Honda of the 1990s had a special modeling policy. For example, in Europe there were two Civics, which were completely different from each other. The ‘English’ version appeared in 1995 and received a facelift two years later that is more than you might think.

The Civic in question is in fact the successor of the Concerto, which was previously also run alongside the Civic, but at least distinguished itself with its own name. From 1995 all models in this segment were called Civic, even if they secretly had very little to do with each other. As a three-door hatchback, coupe or sedan, a Civic from 1995 was simply the model that was also sold in the rest of the world. Until 1995, that was the so-called EG, with the typical split tailgate of the ‘three-door’. From 1995 we were introduced to the ‘EK’, the model with the semicircular headlamps.

However, it is not all about those cars today. No, we focus on the five-door liftback, the direct successor to the Concerto and a model built in England and specially developed for Europe. The latter is only partly true, because the Civic in question shared its base with the Domani delivered in Japan (photo 11 and 12). However, that was a sedan and the Civic of that generation never, although its brother Rover 400 was there as a four-door. That car would later be called 45 and appeared in this form in this section.

Everything new

The facelift of the Civic was already in 1997. At a quick glance, not much seems to have changed, although the bright headlights are immediately noticeable. If we look again, it is noticeable that secretly the entire front is really new. For example, the headlights are positioned higher and no longer create a notch in the front bumper. Their new shape also means that the front screens are slightly different. The hood continues downwards from 1997 and also includes the grille, which in turn bears a larger and revised Honda emblem. The front bumper looks a bit bolder on the newer model, thanks to larger air intakes.

At the rear, Honda takes it easy in q997 and the most striking change is the arrival of taillights in two instead of three colors. Yet the biggest news is ultimately here, because in 1998 Honda introduces the Aerodeck. The Concerto was never awarded such a station wagon variant and was last available under the name Civic in 1983. In this form, the European Civic lasted until 2001, after which a new, global Civic took office. Without a station wagon, this time.
