BMW: ‘The Netherlands can be ready for EVs, others are not’

BMW is one of the many major brands that do not make the promise to sell only electric cars by 2040. According to a company leader, BMW does not have enough confidence in the infrastructure in various countries.

Like Toyota, BMW indicates that the full switch to a purely electric offer is only possible if the countries where BMW sells cars are also ready for it. In any case, this is apparent from the words of Thomas Becker, chiefly responsible for BMW’s sustainability strategy, in conversation with The seas. According to him, there are two countries in particular that are simply miles ahead of the rest: “It is ready in the Netherlands and in Norway, so those markets are going to be fully electric, but we cannot conclude today that the people in Italy are doing their job. going to do well.”

Where Toyota finds the 2040 target unrealistic with a view to (developing) countries in Africa, Asia and South America, Becker also sees pitfalls closer to home. He points out that the charging infrastructure in Italy is still nowhere compared to the Netherlands and lashes out at the political leaders there in fairly strong words. It’s up to them to change this, then BMW’s view of it may change. “Those folks are just waiting for someone to throw in money to put them to work. They won’t do it themselves.” According to Becker, sharp targets are therefore needed for such countries to move them in that direction.

According to Becker, such a sharp target for BMW itself does not make much sense, first the market must show that it is ready for it. “We’re not saying we don’t believe in making BMW all-electric, we’re saying we need conditions that we can’t create ourselves.”
