BMW’s sporty M division is working on its own model. A thick SUV that still listens to the name XM. BMW is now showing a first glimpse of the study model.

The rumors that BMW M is working on its own model have been around for a long time. At first it was going to be a modern incarnation of the M1 from the 70s, but it turned out not to be. What was confirmed, however, is that BMW is working on a standalone M model. That turns out to be the car that we have seen pass by before and that we have referred to it as ‘X8’ for a while. Incidentally, we could already tell you in July that the ‘X8’ could also dry up as ‘XM’ and that indeed seems to be happening.

BMW now shows the front of a clearly hefty SUV with a completely oversized grille on a shadowy teaser plate. A concept car that goes by the name XM Concept. BMW makes no bones about what we can expect from it: ‘High performance, electrified’, an enormous powerhouse with partly electric drive. BMW also indicates that it will be a truly unique X model for M. This feeds the theory that XM will also be the name for the production version, although X8M would still be possible given the placement in the range. Now let’s hope for BMW that Citroën will not lie.

As we saw in the spy photos, the XM gets a pretty quirky front. In the teaser image we see that there are only relatively small daytime running lights high in the nose, but the production version gets the actual headlights lower in the nose. The back is an even bigger mystery. On the driving prototype, that was very tightly packed, although it was already noticeable that the XM gets big ‘hips’ and also two stacked exhaust pipes on either side.

The basic power therefore still comes from an internal combustion engine. Carefully count on the fact that this is the 4.4 biturbo six-in-line that we also already know in the X7 M50, although it will undoubtedly lead to a much higher system power thanks to electrical support than the 530 hp that the most powerful X7 produces. has its disposal. Logically, the BMW XM aims its arrows at cars like the Lamborghini Urus and then you can assume well beyond the 600 hp power. So very promising. We will probably hear more in early December.
