Google is working on Android 12L, a new update specifically tailored for tablets and foldable phones. In this article we briefly discuss the six new things and improvements that will soon also be available on smartphones.
Android 12L for phones
If you compare it with the rich improvements that iPads have received in previous years, you could say that Android tablets are somewhat underwhelmed. iPads have a separate variant of iOS that takes the larger screen into account, and developers also create custom app interfaces. On Android tablets, on the other hand, we still see too often that phone apps are simply scaled, which does not look very nice and also works less well.
So there is a need for Android 12L: the update in which Google promises improvements, and we discuss them in this article. This update is not only intended for tablets, but also for foldable smartphones. This allows users to better deal with the larger screen space. Yet smartphones also get attention with this update XDA Developers.
6 new things for phones:
- Quickly choose wallpaper: By long pressing the screen you can already choose an option to change the background of the home screen. Now, when you press and hold, you immediately get a preview of your current background, along with four other options that you can immediately tap to change your background.
- Close call: Anyone who has a Google Nest Hub at home will soon be able to accept calls on the screen. This is possible when you are at home and your phone is nearby. You then talk to your interlocutor thanks to the microphone of your smart screen.
- To use volume buttons when casting: With Android 12, it was no longer possible to adjust the volume while casting on your TV thanks to the volume buttons on your phone. Google addresses that problem in Android 12L.
- Dynamic colors: Google is going to share its API around dynamic colors with phone manufacturers. Here’s a list of brands that support the dynamic colors in Material You.
- Adjusting App Orientation: Apps can optionally specify in which orientation they should be opened. That just doesn’t always work well on foldable phones. Consider, for example, the Galaxy Z Fold 3, which has both a smaller cover screen and a 7.6-inch main screen. Manufacturers can ignore those app preferences in Android 12L.
- Spatial audio: Sony and Google have been working together for some time on spatial audio, also known as ‘360 Reality Audio’. It is a system where sound seems to come from all directions. Google is now rolling out a system for apps that want to use Spatial audio on phones that support the feature.
