The Internet is full of unreliable download sites. Therefore, never just install any program. Avoid sites like Download.com, Cnet, and Softonic. Two reliable Dutch sites with downloads are Freesoftware.nl and Tweakers.net.

A program is often offered as an .exe file. This is a file that the computer uses to install the program. After a click on a download link (with such an exe file behind it) the choice follows ‘run’ or ‘save’. Choose To carry out. The program file is then saved in a temporary folder and the program is installed immediately afterwards.

Often the progress of the download can be followed in a window. This shows the percentage of the download that has already been completed and approximately how long the process will take. The time it takes depends on the size of the file and the speed of the internet connection.

Sometimes the “User Account Control” window appears asking if the program is allowed to make changes to the computer. Can the software manufacturer be trusted? click on Yes if you are sure you are downloading from a reliable source.

You may encounter a window where you must agree to the terms of use or license agreements before you are allowed to install the program. It is generally known that few people actually read the terms and conditions.

You will be shown the location where the program is stored on the computer. This location generally does not need to be changed, as a default location is usually chosen. This is something like ‘C:Program files’.

Pay attention if you come across a window during the installation where options have to be checked or unchecked. Read carefully what the checked points are. Is it a shortcut on the Desktop? Or will additional software be installed? Always refuse that. It is never necessary and only pollutes the PC.
