Local governments in China are boosting car sales

The city administrations of major cities in China are coming up with measures to boost sales of new passenger cars, local media wrote Wednesday.

In Guangzhou, residents are eligible for a grant to purchase NEVs. This includes fully electric cars, models with a plug-in hybrid powertrain and vehicles with a fuel cell. The city government provides a purchase subsidy of 10,000 yuan (about € 1,300). Cities are also playing with the idea of increasing the maximum permitted number of new cars. Such quotas have been introduced in recent years to combat congestion and smog.

In Hangzhou, the limit will be increased by twenty thousand vehicles. A few years ago, the maximum number was still 80,000 cars per year. The cities of Zhuhai and Fuoshan in Guangzhou Province are also going to widen the limits.

In Beijing, it was rumored on Tuesday that the limit on the number of NEVs would triple to 150,000 copies, which caused a lot of commotion. In the capital, the waiting time for an NEV is about nine years, while residents who want a fuel car depend on a lottery for permission. The city council released a statement earlier today that the proposal has not yet been approved.
