Keep in touch with (old) acquaintances via Facebook. Send them a friend request, or accept requests from others, and follow the posts they share.
Send friend request
There is not much to do on Facebook without friends. So users send each other friend requests to get in touch. If the other accepts the request, you can see and respond to each other’s posts. Send a friend request in the Facebook app on tablet or smartphone (Android or iOS). Isn’t that app on the device yet? Then download it in the App Store (iPad/iPhone) or in the Play Store (Android).
- Open the app facebook.
- Tap the magnifying glass icon at the top right.
- Type the first and last name of the person you want to add as a friend.
- Suggestions appear below the search bar. Tap the name of the person you are looking for.
- A list of people who match the search will appear. Handy: their photo is included, so they are easier to recognize. Tap a name or photo.
- The profile opens. Tap below the round photo Add (Android) or Add as friend (iPad/iPhone).
- On Android devices, a list of people Facebook thinks you know will appear. Simply tap Add to send a friend request to someone from the list. Or tap the cross at the top left.
If the other person accepts the friend request, you will be notified.
Accept or decline friend request
Decide for yourself whether to accept or decline someone else’s friend request.
- In the menu, tap Friend Requests to view open requests. If there is a red number next to this, a new request has been made.
- Tap on Confirm to accept a friend request. Or tap remove to reject someone. The other is not notified of a rejection.
- Tap on the icon of a house to return to the home screen.
Remove friend
If, for whatever reason, you no longer want to be friends with someone online, end the ‘friendship’. Read more about how to do this in the tip ‘Unfollow someone on Facebook’.
