Add Flags to Mail Attachment on iPad

Add drawings, text or other notes to an email attachment on the iPad. Handy to clarify something on a photo or PDF file.


How to add a flag to an attachment in iOS 13 or later:

  • Tap on Mail.
  • Tap the pen square icon to create a new email.
  • Double-tap the message field to add an attachment.
  • A black menu appears. Tap in it Insert photo or video or Attach file (iPadOS 15)/add the attachment (iPad OS 14 and earlier). If you don’t see this text, first tap the arrow to the right.
  • Find and tap the photo or file for the attachment.
  • Tap the cross (from iOS 13).
  • The attachment is now in the email. Tap the attachment twice.
  • A menu will appear. Tap here Markers.
  • At the bottom are several tools to mark the attachment. On the far left, a pen icon is selected. You can draw on the attachment with your finger or stylus. But you can also first adjust the color of the pen via the circles on the right. Tap the desired color.
  • Sign on the attachment, for example to clarify something.
  • Want to unmark? Then tap the arrow to the left.
  • When you’re done, tap Ready.

The edited attachment is now in the email. Send the email in the usual way.
