We have good news for those who are not quite ready for the fully electric car: the plug-in hybrid is on the rise. This also means that prices can go down, so it is high time to see what the cheapest PHEVs are currently on the market.
For the business driver, there is no longer a great financial advantage to be gained by driving a plug-in. The success days of cars such as the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV and Volvo V60 Twin Engine are definitely behind us, but for private individuals the road to a plug hybrid seems more attractive than ever. There is now a lot more to choose than a few years ago. In an effort to reduce their global CO2 emissions, car manufacturers are almost forced to come with partially electric cars.
Those cars also have to be sold, so a reasonable price tag is more or less mandatory. In addition, the half-rate for the motor vehicle tax for cars with a theoretical CO2 emission of less than 50 grams applies for the time being. Add to that the fact that these cars still win prizes in the Netherlands when it comes to the CO2-based BPM rate, and suddenly there is a very attractive row of cars ready.
Kia is equally active in the PHEV field with the Niro and Optima, but recently added plug-ins based on the Ceed and Xceed. With a price tag of less than $ 35 million, the cars prove to be cheap enough to win first and second place on the podium. This is followed by an old acquaintance: the Mitsubishi Outlander. The hefty Japanese has now aged, but for those looking for space, this SUV seems to be an excellent offer for € 35,990. However, the brand new Ford Kuga may also be an option. The 225 hp 2.5 Plug-In is less than 3 mille more expensive than the 1.5 Ecoboost with 120 hp, which also has to do without an automatic.
After the Niro PHEV, sixth is the only Toyota plug-in hybrid, the Prius plug-in. The impressively economical Japanese, also without plugs, is followed by the Mercedes-Benz A250e, which, like the Citroën C5 Aircross (number 8), is the cheapest in a business-oriented business version. The Opel brother of the C5, the Grandland X, kicks it to 11th place (not shown). The list is rounded off by the Mini Countryman Cooper S E and the very fresh Skoda Superb iV, which offers an impressive amount of space for a thick 42 mille even as a hatchback.
