Browser Safari
Do you own an Apple computer (Mac)? Then you probably use the Safari browser to browse the internet. On a Mac, Safari is installed by default as the internet browser. Safari is not much different from other browsers, such as Chrome and Edge, in the basic operations. Yet there are differences. The appearance of the browsers is different, the functions may differ and the menus and buttons have different names. Here we use Safari 15 (read the article ‘Which version do I have?’ to find out which version you are using). If there are deviations from previous versions, this will be stated.
Open Safari
Open the Safari application with a click on the compass icon in the Dock. Is the icon not here? Then follow the steps below:
- Open Finder from the smiley face icon on the Dock.
- Click on the left apps.
- Double click on Safari.
Open a website in Safari
You can open a particular website in any browser via the address bar. That’s the bar at the top of the page. For example, enter the address (URL) of a website.
- Click on the address bar.
- Type a web address, for example ‘seniorweb.nl’, and press the Enter key.
- If you have used Safari before, suggestions from websites will appear below the address bar. Click on the site you want to visit.
- The website comes into view.
To the left of the address bar are two arrows: left and right. The left arrow allows you to browse websites or pages that you have previously visited.
Open windows and tabs
Once Safari opens, a window with one tab will appear. This allows you to surf the web right away. However, do you want to open multiple web pages at once? Then there are two possibilities. Opening an entirely new window or opening additional tabs in the current window. This last option shows at a glance which pages are open.
Open new window in Safari
Open a new window as follows:
- Open Safari.
- Click at the top of the menu Archive and then on New window.
Open multiple tabs
Opening an additional tab works as follows:
- Open Safari.
- Click the plus sign in the top right corner of the window
.
- Type a web address and press the Enter key.
- Only one tab is visible at a time. Click on another tab to view the contents.
You can then close a tab like this:
- Move the mouse pointer over a tab.
- A cross appears on the left side of the tab
. Click on this cross.
Search in Safari
The address bar can search not only by web addresses, but also by search terms. Type one or more keywords in the address bar and press the Enter key. For example: type a part of a song’s lyrics to find out what the song’s name is again. Then the search results appear. By default, Safari uses the Google search engine. Don’t want to use Google? Then change the default search engine.
- Open Safari.
- Click in the menu bar on Safari.
- click on Preferences.
- Click on the tab To search.
- Choose behind ‘Search engine’ on google and click the desired option in the drop-down box.
- Close the Preferences window. The setting has been adjusted immediately.
Set home page
If you often visit the same website, it may be useful to set it as your home page. Every time you open the browser, this website also opens automatically. Read how this works in the tip ‘Customize Safari home page on Mac’.
Save web pages with bookmarks
If you want to save a web page or want to be able to find it quickly, you can use bookmarks. They work as follows.
- Go to the page you want to remember.
- Click in the menu bar on bookmarks > Add bookmark.
- A window will appear showing where the URL will be added (Favorites) and a title. Adjust this title if necessary. And make sure the desired save location is selected.
- click on add and the web page has been added to the Bookmarks Bar.
How to find bookmarks:
- To the left of the address bar, click the icon
.
- click on bookmarks. A list of all bookmarks expands.
- In Safari 14 or older: Click on a book icon
.
- In Safari 14 or older: Click on a book icon
- Click on a bookmark to open its page.
- If necessary, click on the icon again
next to the address bar to close the bookmarks column.
Anonymous Search with Private Browsing
Use Private Browsing to prevent people from viewing your search history. This can be useful, for example, if you want to order a birthday present online and do not want others to see which websites you have visited. Private browsing does not save history history, passwords, cookies, and other information for visited websites.
- Click in the menu bar on Archive.
- click on New private window.
Surfing works the same as usual. But browsing data is not saved in private browsing.
