You often see that sporty models have the longest life. Not so much because they are handled calmly, on the contrary, but because they usually achieve fancier status. That is also the case with this Volkswagen Scirocco GTX.
It must be said that the Scirocco in itself was absolutely worth cherishing, even the simpler versions. In its day it was a flashy thing to see and of course the Scirocco was from the start more of a car for enthusiasts than for those who simply needed a means of transport. Over the years, however, the sporty model on a Golf basis also fell prey to a different kind of car crazies, who did not value the preservation of originality and handling it calmly. That cost some Scirocco’s lives.
However, this one is still there. A real Scirocco GTX, spotted by AutoWeek forum member HarmenA. It seems that this example has escaped too thorough renovation work in its 36-year existence, although there is an aftermarket muffler and a separate grille. Furthermore, it is a Scirocco GTX as we like to see it. Incidentally, the designation GTX can mean several things. You had different versions that had this designation. This is the 1.8 GTX with an output of 112 hp and that was the top version of the Scirocco for part of 1984 and 1985. There was also a lower 1.6 GTX in the market and a month after this 1.8 GTX rolled off the line, the just above GTX 16V (139 hp) appeared. In 1986, the arrival of the catalytic converter reduced the power of the eight-valve 1.8, then only referred to as GTX, to 95 hp and narrowed that of the GTX 16V to 129 hp.
With a wash and the installation of a standard exhaust, this black Scirocco can be visually restored to perfect condition. It is uncertain whether it is technically all right. He has already had a fairly eventful life if we go by the license plate data. The car arrived in the Netherlands in 1998 and has since gone through eight owners. The current one has only been running for a year. Hopefully with due frugality, because it would be nice if he stayed with us.
