Create organization chart in Word

Creating an organization chart in Word is easy. Insert a custom org chart and edit it to your liking.

Making a family tree? Or map out the hierarchy of the association where you are active? This can be done well with an organization chart, also known as an organization chart. Making such a schematic representation of an organization probably sounds difficult and time-consuming. Fortunately, Word lends a hand. Insert an organization chart and adjust the text, color and style.

Place an organization chart in a document like this:

  • Open the Word document in which you want to create an organization chart.
  • Click on the tab at the top Insert.
  • Click on the ‘Insert SmartArt graphic’ icon Insert SmartArt Graphic.
  • click on Hierarchy and then right on the desired option, for example Organization chart.
  • click on OK.

The organization chart is in the document.

The organization chart has several compartments. Each box contains the word ‘Text’. Adjust this easily.

  • In the org chart, click a box with the word “Text” and type your text, such as a name.
  • Repeat the previous step until all boxes are filled.
  • Wrong text entered? Click on the appropriate box and edit the text.

Are there too few courses in the organization chart? Then add a subject.

  • In the org chart, right-click the box where you want a box next to, above, or below.
  • click on Add shape.
  • Choose Insert shape after, Insert shape for it, Insert Shape Above or Insert shape below.

The organization chart now has an extra box.

Oh no, one box too many? Remove it easily.

  • Right-click the box you want to remove from the org chart.
  • In the menu that opens at the top, click To cut.

The organization chart changes immediately.

Make the organization chart clearer or more personal with a nice color.

Change entire org chart color

  • Right-click on an empty spot next to the org chart.
  • click on Colour.
  • Choose the desired color under ‘Colorful’, for example Colorful Range – Accent Colors 3 to 4.

The color changes immediately.

Change color of one box

You can also change the color of one box in the org chart. Do this like this:

  • Right-click on the box whose color you want to change.
  • Under ‘Format Shape’, click padding.
  • Choose the color you want.

Change the style of the organization chart, for example to 3D.

  • Right-click on an empty spot next to the org chart.
  • click on Style.
  • Choose the style you want, for example Intense effect of polished under ‘3D’.

If necessary, change a box to a different symbol.

  • Right-click the box you want to reshape.
  • click on Change shape.
  • Select the desired symbol by clicking on it, for example the heart.

Regret all the adjustments you’ve made? Restore the original layout. The texts do not change.

  • Click on the organization chart.
  • Click on the tab at the top SmartArt design.
  • Right click Reset graphics.
