Searching messages in Gmail

Easily find messages from a specific sender or with a specific word with Gmail’s extensive search function.


If you use Gmail, your online mailbox can fill up with messages. Especially if you don’t clean up regularly. Finding that one e-mail in the many gigabytes of messages is no easy task. Fortunately, Gmail has a search function that makes it a lot easier. You don’t have to search long for the search function in Gmail.

  • surf to www.gmail.com and log in.
  • Type your search term in the search box at the top.
  • Click on the magnifying glass.
  • Open the results. Click on the desired email.

If you are looking for a message from a specific sender or if you remember that the message contained an attachment, you can use the more extensive search function:

  • Click the inverted triangle in the search box.
  • A search form will appear. Enter the desired search terms and click on the magnifying glass.

Not yet found? The search location can also be adjusted. Instead of searching in the Inbox, you can also search in ‘Sent messages’ or in the ‘Trash’.

  • Click the inverted triangle in the search box.
  • A search form will appear. click on All email and select where to search. For example in ‘Mail& Spam & Trash’.
  • Enter the desired search terms and click on the magnifying glass.
