Tesla provides the brakes of the Model S Plaid with a significant upgrade. In the American Tesla Shop the ‘Carbon Ceramic Brake Kit’ has appeared as an option. For that you will have to pull the cut.
Ceramic brakes are not cheap. With that in mind, it is not surprising that Tesla is asking $20,000 (converted €17,721) for the kit. carscoops.com found out about the page on the Tesla Shop. Included in the kit are four carbon ceramic brake discs with a diameter of 41 centimeters. While the size of the discs is the same for all four wheels, the rear discs at 32mm are slightly less thick than the front discs, which measure 40mm. The calipers have six pistons at the front and four pistons at the rear. The customer also receives ‘high-performance’ brake pads with the package and a bottle of brake fluid that can withstand high temperatures.
That Tesla comes with better brakes for the street version of the Model S Plaid is not a big surprise, given the Nürburgring rivalry with Porsche. According to Tesla, the brake discs are designed for the “ultimate track experience” and deliver “repeatable braking power when driving at high speed”. In particular, the heat resistance must be a lot better than it is now. Incidentally, the brakes can only be used in combination with the 21-inch Arachnid wheels, which have an additional cost of €4,800 in the Netherlands. In the Netherlands, the Model S Plaid will not be launched on the market until the end of 2022, so the ceramic brakes cannot be ordered here yet. Tesla Netherlands late opposite AutoWeek know that it is not yet clear whether and if so when the ceramic brake discs will be available here.
Incidentally, Porsche already supplies optional ceramic brakes on the Taycan 4S and Turbo for €9,438 and €6,296 respectively. They are standard on the Taycan Turbo S. At Audi, the ceramic brakes cost €6,756 on the RS e-tron GT. So much cheaper than Tesla.
