GMC is testing Sierra electric pickup

GMC gives the world a first look at the first fully electric GMC Sierra pick-up truck. The car is certainly new, but not a surprise in the least.

A GMC Sierra is nothing more or less than the twin brother of the Chevrolet Silverado. We already know that an EV of that Silverado is on the way. The Sierra is therefore a logical sequel, although this is the first time that we hear something about the electric GMC Sierra.

With the above in mind, it’s good to know that while the electric GMC Sierra shares its base with the electric Chevrolet Silverado, both cars have little in common technically with the regular Silverado and Sierra. Unlike Ford’s F-150 Lightning, this is not about the electric version of an existing model, but about unique ‘trucks’ that are built on a platform specially developed for EVs. We already know that platform from GMC, because it is shared with the electric Hummer, which is also formally a GMC product.

For the time being, GMC only shows a sketch of the front of the Sierra. That is clearly that of a large pick-up, with the important difference that the grille here is actually not a grille. The headlights are LED copies and remain very narrow over the entire length. GMC consistently calls the new EV ‘electric Sierra Denali’, because the EV will only be available as a luxury Denali when it is introduced. It is not known whether there will be less thickly dressed versions later on. The electric GMC Sierra should be on the market next year, while the first GMC Hummers will be delivered this month, in December 2021.
