Volkswagen announces what the Volkswagen ID5, the smooth brother of the ID4, should cost. As announced, the car is available in three flavors, but always with a large battery pack.

When we introduced the Volkswagen ID5, we wrote: “…a well-informed whispered to us that the idea is that an ID5 will be about €1,500 more expensive than a comparable ID4.” That is somewhat correct, but only if you are willing to make some concessions outside the loss of space for the sportier carriage of the ID5. The ID5 is available with the combination of 174 hp and the 77 kWh battery pack that belongs to the Pro version. This does not exist (yet) with an ID4. 170 hp means there for the time being the much smaller 52 kWh large Pure battery and 204 hp is the lower limit for the Pro battery.

Due to this policy, the price difference between the cheapest ID4 with 77 kWh and the cheapest ID5 with 77 kWh is ‘only’ €1,600, but then you will be giving up 30 hp of power. If you want an ID5 with 204 hp, the difference increases to €3,100.

The cheapest ID5, the 174 hp Pro, therefore, costs €48,590. The 204 hp version costs €50,090, against €46,990 for the technically identical ID4. The top model of the ID5 is the GTX, which comes with an additional electric motor to four-wheel drive and 299 hp. This version costs €55,690, €2,700 more than an ID4 GTX.
