Self-actualization means finally doing what you want, following your dreams. We’ll show you how you can take your life into your own hands.

Self-actualization – what is it?

Self-actualization is

  • when you listen to yourself, pursue your dreams, goals and needs
  • uses and fully exploits your skills and potential
  • stand up for yourself
  • live independently
  • take responsibility for yourself and your life.

That may sound like selfishness. But it is not, because: Personal responsibility makes the difference. Those who act selfishly act without consideration for others and therefore often irresponsibly. But if you take responsibility for yourself, you say, yes, here I am and that is me. And he stands by his strengths and successes, as well as his weaknesses and mistakes.

Self-realization affects all areas of life and all phases of development, private life as well as the job, students in their early twenties as well as newly minted retirees. And you will always have to redefine self-realization – depending on the phase of your life.

For you this means: Self-realization is a process that can accompany you throughout your life. Take it as a chance to rediscover yourself and your desires, your dreams and needs over and over again.

Realizing oneself means: knowing for yourself and determining yourself

Mom or dad, aunt or uncle, friend: inside, the partner: in – there are many people who think they know what is best for you. And often it’s not bad at all to listen to the people you have spent so much time with in your life.

But most of the time you spent with yourself. And that’s why you know each other best. Don’t you think you know what you really want and what is best for you? Never mind, try to find out and explore. A few questions will help you find out how you can develop:

  • What can I? What are my skills? What am i good at?
  • What do I enjoy?
  • What are my goals?
  • What am i dreaming of
  • What is important to me
  • How do i want to be
  • How do I want to live?
  • What am I passionate about and what do I live for?

But don’t let other people talk you into it. Talk to them, well and good, get tips from them, listen to their advice. But self-actualization also has a lot to offer live more self-determined to do. And that’s why you’ll never really feel like that’s what you want to do if you only follow what others tell you.

Of course that takes a lot of courage. The courage, maybe sometimes to a loved one To say no: “No, I would like to do it differently now.” But this courage will ultimately give you the feeling that you have stood up for yourself and that you are in control of your own life.

Self-realization through self-awareness

Part of self-actualization is to be aware of yourself, to be self-confident and not to be afraid of new experiences or the opinions of others. Self-actualization requires courage and self-consciousness. When you are aware of your wants and needs, this is the next step: standing up for them. This is also not a step that happens overnight.

  • Take it slow and give yourself time. You don’t have to have yours overnight Quit job.
  • Write yourself a plan with small steps to get closer to your goals and desires. A written plan helps you in two ways: It breaks one big step into several small ones and makes it easier to take the first step. And it also helps you to remain courageous – because what you have put down in writing somewhere, you stick to it more. The plan is, so to speak, “proof” that you want to change something. Unlike when you formulate your wishes only as a vague idea in your head, it is something tangible and gives you support.

Shake off rules

That too has to do with courage: Just leave rigid rules and thought patterns behind you. This is not an invitation to: r lawbreaker: to become. But far too often we allow ourselves to be restricted by our well-known behavioral patterns, by social conventions and norms.

Anyone who really does what they think is important will also meet with criticism from time to time. Because you can’t please everyone. And there will always be someone who doesn’t think what you’re doing is right or who knows better.

It is important that you are convinced of what you are doing. Because then, with a little practice, you can smile calmly in the face of your counterpart. If you are at peace with yourself, you don’t need to be unsettled by criticism from others.

Don’t get it wrong: The responsibility that you bear also obliges you to remain self-reflective. You shouldn’t smile away from someone else’s legitimate criticism. It is ideal if you do not allow yourself to be unsettled by others.

The right time

The right time may or may not be there. You may come to a turning point in your life at some point and then that is when you realize that you want to change something. This can be in the morning when you wake up or in the morning after the fifth cup of coffee in the boring office. But that can also go through Lovesickness or have a serious illness.

Such moments may exist and maybe they help you to take the first step towards self-realization. They make it easier because you have less to lose or because you have just grasped the real value of life.

A moment like that may come – but you shouldn’t wait for it. If you are dissatisfied, feel controlled by others or just have the feeling that you are not doing what you want, why not change something now? At this moment? In small, first steps?

by the way: The Yoga Code of the Niyamas can also help you to get closer to your self-realization step by step.
