While the new car market suffered quite a lot from negative conditions such as the chip shortage in 2021, the used car market flourished. 2021 even seems to be a record year for the occasion! But which brands and models are most in demand? These are the seven most wanted second-hand cars in the AutoWeek Occasion Finder.
1. Volkswagen Golf
Volkswagen Golf GT
The Volkswagen Golf leads this occasion top list. The ever popular compact middle class is no longer in the top-5 of best-selling cars, but is widely available on the used market. At the time of writing, there are 4,518 copies on the AutoWeek OccasionFinder alone, making the Golf by far the most widely available used Volkswagen.
2. BMW 3 Series
BMW 3 Series
Let’s continue with the German brands. The BMW 3-series is also a welcome and sought-after guest in the used country. Over the years, many variants of BMW’s successful mid-range car have appeared: from sedan and Touring to convertible and from economical 316i to powerful M3. This wide range is spread over several generations, accounting for 3,058 used cars on the AutoWeek Occasion Finder. So plenty of choice, which doesn’t exactly make the search any easier.
3. Mercedes-Benz C-Class
Mercedes-Benz C-Class
Opposite the BMW 3 series is the Mercedes-Benz C-class. In the battle between Stuttgart and Munich in this ranking, BMW takes the prize, but the C is also an occasion that is much sought after. Remarkably enough, the Audi A4 shines through its absence. The C-class has also been around for a while, but is less well represented in the used car range than the three: you can choose from 1,775 copies.
4. BMW 5 Series
BMW 5 Series
The BMW 5-series is the last German in this list, with which BMW is well represented above average. The 5-series has now also been running for quite some time and, moreover, more and more copies are reaching the young timer status. During its life, the 5-series has only been available as a sedan or Touring, but 1,746 copies can be found on the Occasion Finder. Are you going for a 520i, or that E60 M5 with its mighty high-revving V10?
5. Toyota Yaris
Toyota Yaris
The current Toyota Yaris is a lot hipper than its predecessors. The previous generations are slightly more modest in appearance, but have a reliable reputation and are not expensive to buy and use. It is therefore not surprising that there is still a lot of search for it. It is also the only Japanese in this list. With 1,699 copies, it is also the Toyota with the widest range.
6. Ford Focus
Ford Focus
Ford recently gave the Focus a facelift. In the Netherlands, however, new cars are anything but cheap, so it quickly pays to take a look at the used car market. Many people do that for a Focus. With 2,563 copies, the range is in any case large enough to be able to make a choice.
7. Volvo XC40
Volvo XC40
The Volvo XC40 is a striking model in this list, because the other cars have been on the market for quite some time in different generations. The XC40 has not been around that long in comparison, but is nevertheless an occasion that people like to look for. There are currently 1,035 copies for sale on the AutoWeek OccasionFinder. The vast majority of those copies have a petrol engine, of the electric XC40 P8 Recharge only 25 copies are online. So if you are looking for an addition blaster quickly, then your choice is not huge.
Also interesting: the occasion portal Gas pedal offers us an insight into the car brands that were searched the most last year. Volkswagen is number one, followed by Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Audi and Ford. The least popular car brands on Accelerator last year were Dodge, Subaru, Saab, Dacia and Jeep.
