From the end of this year, the Audi E-tron will be given a new name. That reports the German Automobilwoche. The name change of the Audi E-Tron is related to the arrival of another electric SUV from the brand: the Q6 E-tron.
As far as naming is concerned, the Audi E-tron is a strange flutter these days. It is the only Audi car whose name is actually an engine designation. When Audi launched the E-tron, however, it was the brand’s first all-electric car, a car that opened the door for the arrival of a whole range of electric models at Audi. Meanwhile, ‘e-tron’ – the name that once indicated that you were dealing with a plug-in hybrid of the brand – with which Audi indicates that you have an electric model in front of you. We know the Q4 e-tron and E-tron GT and there will be a whole set soon. It seems time for Audi to rename the simply E-tron electric SUV to the Q8 e-tron.
At the end of this year, Audi will present the Q6 e-tron, a new electric SUV that will be the first Audi to use the Premium Platform Electric (PPE) platform. That SUV will be a technical brother of the electric Macan that Porsche has in the development rooms. That Q6 E-tron is a size smaller than the E-tron called SUV, but to make the placement of the E-tron SUV in Audi’s range clear, renaming the car to Q8 E-tron does not seem a bad choice.
Audi will perform a facelift later this year on the E-tron and its Sportback brother and that seems like a good time to make the name change. Undoubtedly, Audi will also take a closer look at the technology of the SUVs during that additional session, although Audi improved the performance of the cars not long ago. Later this year we will know whether the E-tron will actually be called Q8 E-tron.
