Inveterate Porsche purists still struggle with all the non-911 models rolling off the line in Zuffenhausen. To them, the all-electric Taycan is absolutely sacrilege. Customers see this differently. By 2021, Porsche sold more Taycans than 911s worldwide. In the Netherlands, the Taycan was even a top seller.
Despite all the global turmoil, 2021 was a record year for Porsche. The Germans managed to sell no fewer than 301,915 cars. Never before have the Germans delivered so many cars in one year. Not surprisingly, China remains Porsche’s largest market.
The Taycan turns out to be a bull’s eye
The fact that SUVs are still immensely popular is apparent from Porsche’s figures. The Macan and Cayenne lead the list with 88,362 and 83,071 orders respectively. More remarkable is the enormous success of the electric Porsche Taycan. No fewer than 41,296 people wanted one.
This strikes a sensitive chord with the die-hard Porsche fans. Their beloved 911 sold less well: 38,464 units to be exact. This is still a particularly high number for an expensive sports car, but that the car has to recognize its superiority in its electric brother is painful for the purists. Not for Porsche. Knowing that the sales of the Taycan have doubled in a year, they cannot believe their luck in Zuffenhausen.
The four-door Panamera also feels cornered by its electric counterpart. ‘Only’ 30,220 people preferred the sedan with combustion engine over the plug-in car. Closers in the list are the Boxster and Cayman, which together managed to make 20,502 buyers happy.
In the Netherlands even list leader
If we look at the Dutch sales figures, we see a similar trend. Here too, Porsche drivers want to use the charging station en masse. Not only did the Taycan outsell the 911 (630 units versus 403), it also beat the top-selling Cayenne (588 units) and Macan (102 units).
We also question the latter. Why did the best-selling Porsche of 2021 sell so poorly with us? He even had to let go of the Panamera. Of these, 144 were put on Dutch registration. The Boxster and Cayman found their way to 46 and 20 Dutch ramps respectively.
