It is not yet entirely clear how Ford will replace the Mondeo in Europe. It is crystal clear in what form the Mondeo will continue to exist in China. We are introduced to the all-new fifth generation of Ford’s now thirty-year-old model.
Anyone who keeps a close eye on AutoWeek knows that we have been following the news about the new Ford Mondeo closely. Well before Ford was supposed to be, we showed you an extensive series of photos of the new Mondeo as Ford is launching it in China. Now Ford has unveiled the new sixth-generation Mondeo itself.
In March this year, Ford will be waving goodbye to the Mondeo in Europe. It is not obvious that the model name that has been in use since 1992 will return on another car. In China, however, ‘the Mondeo’ continues to exist. With the new generation Mondeo, Ford is taking a partly familiar and at the same time a new path. As is already well known, the design of the new model is clearly inspired by that of the Evos, a crossover-like model whose nose we see on the new Mondeo. The design of the rear lights of the new Mondeo also shows similarities with the lighting on the back of the Evos. The completely new design for the Mondeo is simply poured over a ‘low model’. The new Ford Mondeo is not a crossover like. A breath of fresh air.

The new Mondeo is the technical brother of the new Zephyr that Ford’s luxury brand Lincoln recently launched in China. Like the Zephyr, the new Mondeo has recessed door handles in the doors. Where Lincoln opted for A-pillars in black, Ford dips the entire top half of his newcomer in a bath of black paint, both the roof and window pillars and the side mirrors are in black. Striking detail are the rear lights, which clearly show a pattern that is reminiscent of the rear lights of the Ford Mustang. The new Mondeo is 4.94 meters long and is therefore more than 6 centimeters longer than the Mondeo that you can still buy in Europe. In addition, the Mondeo grows in width by 2.3 centimeters. The wheelbase has increased to 2.95 meters. That’s quite a bit, the outgoing Mondeo had (also in China) a wheelbase of 2.85 meters.
Ford Mondeo (China)
Ford does not yet share extensive technical specifications. We do know that the car will come with a blown 2.0 in combination with an eight-speed automatic, a machine that sends 328 hp to the front wheels. We could also tell you that before.
The Changan Ford partnership will manufacture the new Mondeo in China. As mentioned, the car will not come to Europe.
