BMW Motorrad achieved a new sales result last year. Worldwide, 194,261 motorcycles were sold, the best result in BMW history and almost 15% more than the 169,272 units of 2020.

In the Netherlands, despite prolonging its market leadership (for the 11th year in a row), BMW Motorrad may have recorded a negative sales result of -5.72% last year, but the rest of Europe and Asia experienced strong growth. Italy showed the highest growth in Europe at 916,034 units / +15.2%), followed by Spain (12,616 units / +14.4%) and France (19,887 units / 13.4%).
In total, 9,100 more BMWs were delivered in Europe, but that is dwarfed by the 14,309 units sold on the other side of the world in China (14,309 units/ +21.4%). In terms of absolute growth, India led the way with a growth of 102.5%, which translated to 5,191 units sold.
In Germany BMW Motorrad – as with us in the Netherlands – admittedly experienced a small contraction, but it remains by far the most important and largest market for the German brand. With 25,972 units sold, BMW managed to defend its position as the most successful motorcycle brand in its own country.
“The fact that we still managed to close 2021 with this fantastic result for BMW Motorrad makes me not only happy, but also incredibly proud. Especially in times of crisis you see how well a team stays together. I would like to express my special thanks to all employees and to the BMW Motorrad business partners, who have made this success possible thanks to their personal commitment and flexibility. My sincere thanks also go to our customers for their loyalty, trust and support.”
The market in the United States developed positively for BMW Motorrad. With 16,030 motorcycles and scooters sold, a growth of 32.1% was achieved compared to the 12,135 units of 2020. The South American market grew less rapidly, Brazil experienced a growth of 4.1% (11,150 units versus 10,707 units in 2020).
Brexit has not had a negative impact on BMW Motorrad in the UK. In Great Britain and Ireland 9,236 units were sold, a growth of 26.6% compared to 2020 (7,315 units).
The driving force behind the sales success remains the Boxer family. More than 60,000 units of the R 1250 GS and R 1250 GS Adventure alone have been sold, almost 1/3 of total sales. Including the R 1250 RT tourer and R 18 family, the boxertwin segment has accounted for almost half of total sales.
The very first M for BMW Motorrad has been less of a success, but given the sky-high price tag and the folded supersport segment, that’s not surprising either. 1,070 units of the M 1000 RR were sold worldwide, while a total of 4,796 units of the three S 1000 models (R, RR and XR) were sold.
“I look forward to 2022 with great confidence as we start the year with what will undoubtedly be the strongest product offering ever. Our four cruiser models from the BMW R 18 model family will enter their first full addition in the first months of 2022 alone. the market launches of the fully electric BMW CE 04 and our four superior 6-cylinder models K 1600 GT/GTL/B and Grand America, which have been further improved in all respects, are absolute toppers in our range and will be launched in the first half of the year for a further boost in sales. We also have a lot planned for the second half of 2022, so our customers and fans are in for some surprises.”
