It may be winter, but where is the snow? Code black for some, a period to look forward to for others, especially if you are blessed with a four-wheel drive. What winter container can you get for up to €5,000?

Daihatsu Terios 1.3 SX
€2,450
2000
197,442 km
This little Japanese comes from 2000 and has more than two decades and 200,000 kilometers of life experience, but as far as we are concerned he still looks pretty cool in the photos. The sleek wheels, the roof rails, the large spare wheel on the tailgate and the gigantic bullbar on the nose provide a wonderful-looking character box that knows how to handle winter conditions quite well. With 1,040 kg on the scale in combination with four-wheel drive, the Terios holds its own. One of the previous owners even screwed a compass and outside temperature gauge into the dashboard, to further underline the adventurous nature of the Terios. It’s just a neat thing.

Suzuki Jimny 1.3 JX
€4.950
1999
186,822 km
The Suzuki Jimny should not be missing from a list of compact off-road vehicles. Of course, our budget does not allow for the last generation to enter the market in 2019. Fortunately, this old-timer from 1999 does fit into the picture. We have found a beautiful blue one that, as far as we are concerned, lies wonderfully on the retina. With its black roof rails and sleek wheels, a cool cart is shining here. The spare wheel on the rear enhances its off-road appearance. He is already old, but the little Suzuki still looks good. Would one of the previous owners ever let him out in the mud? This Jimny has almost two tons of experience on the clock but that shouldn’t be a problem. The booklets are neatly completed and the MOT is still valid until September 2022.

Lada Niva 1.7
€3,499
1995
96,715 km
This spartan Lada Niva is a relic that seems to have entered our modern age straight from the former Soviet Union via the time machine. This beloved off-road vehicle has been in production practically unchanged since 1977 and, like several other Lada models, has acquired cult status. This showpiece from the Eastern Bloc is a full-fledged off-roader, thanks in part to the high and low gearing and an intermediate differential. The Niva that we have found has seen better days and could use some love and attention, but the price is also worth it. Nivas are popular, expensive and scarce on the used car market. Who dares to breathe new life into this sympathetic yet tough Russian?
