It’s the middle of winter and many classics are hiding inside until spring arrives, but not this beautiful Audi 80! Fortunately, we can enjoy it for a while.
Sometimes modern Audis are jokingly called ‘more luxurious Volkswagens’, but that is something that has actually been going on for decades. However, there was also a time when it was the other way around and a Volkswagen was just an Audi derivative. This was also the case with the first generation Audi 80 and the first Volkswagen Passat. The 80 appeared first and a year later the very similar first Passat came on the market. The Passat was therefore broadly the fastback version of the 80. You didn’t have a real sedan from the first Passat, that was reserved for the 80. With a little bit of imagination we have here a ancestor of the recently waved goodbye. sedan, although it is mainly of the A4.
However you look at it, there was no shame that there were similarities. However, we can imagine that in 1976, when this copy came off the line, the 80 already came across a bit dated because of its front cover. Audi put that right in that year with a pretty drastic facelift.
The facelifted Audi 80 B1
Just before the time came, this red 80 – which AutoWeek forum member HarmenA ran into – rolled off the production line. We really mean just before the facelift, it could just be that this is one of the very last primal 80s. So something really special, especially as a two-door. Moreover, based on these photos, it seems that we are really dealing with a flawless copy here, no doubt it was once thoroughly restored. In any case, it is still a relatively new guest in the Netherlands, because only a little over a year ago the 80 was first registered here. A nice modest version, by the way, with its 60 hp 1.3, the basic engine.
