The Tesla factory near Berlin may not start production in the coming weeks, but now it really doesn’t seem to be long. The first cars will probably roll off the production line in March.
It will be a few more weeks before Tesla can start car production at its German ‘Gigafactory’ near Berlin. According to the authorities in the state of Brandenburg, where the factory is located, the approval process is in its final phase. According to the Brandenburg Ministry of the Environment, it will nevertheless “take a while” before production can start. Regional media write that the factory will not be started before March.
When fully operational, the factory will be capable of producing 500,000 electric cars per year. The European delivery of the Model Y, in particular, is heavily dependent on the opening of the Grünheide plant. Now the Models Y for our part of the world still come from China.
Tesla started construction on the factory in 2019, after the company received preliminary approval. Actually, production should have started last year. However, local authorities are still evaluating the plant’s environmental impacts, with particular concerns over water consumption. Tesla previously encountered resistance from local residents and environmentalists. A piece of forest had to be cut down for the construction of the factory, which led to a number of protest actions, especially in 2020.
