Nissan pulled the curtain on the all-new Frontier around this time last year: a pickup that competes with the Toyota Hilux and Ford Ranger, among others. For the Chicago Auto Show, which takes place from February 12 to 21, Nissan is hoisting the Frontier in three special outdoor outfits.
The three concept models are called ‘Project 72X’, ‘Project Hardbody’ and ‘Project Adventure’. They are quite different in design. The Project 72X, the gray one in the photos, is a contemporary interpretation of the 1979 Datsun 720. It was a cheap, minimalist pick-up, which is reflected in the Project 72X in the steel wheels with off-road tires and halogen headlights. There is special ‘4×4’ striping on the sides and a roll bar on top of the cargo area. Also, Nissan raised the Project 72x with a 2.5-inch (6.25 cm) ‘lift kit’, which is adjustable from the front.
The red Frontier in the photos is the ‘Project Hardbody’, which in many ways resembles the 72X. It’s raised a little more at 3 inches (7.5 cm) and the upper wishbones are fully adjustable. The Project Hardbody also has off-road tires with a 33-inch diameter, fender edges in black plastic and the front bumper is completely black. In addition, there are two large LED spotlights on the rollbar. The Project Hardbody owes its name to the Nissan D21 ‘Hardbody’.
Finally, Nissan shows the ‘Project Adventure’, the most extremely modified Frontier of the bunch. It is based on the Frontier Crew Cab PRO-4X, which means that unlike the other two, it does have LED headlights. The Project Adventure also has a large roof rack on which, among other things, a roof tent can be placed. The Project Adventure is raised by a whopping 5 inches (12.5 cm) and has off-road tires with a diameter of 34 inches. Also, the pickup has a carbon fiber snorkel, which means you can drive through deep waters. Keep that adventure coming.
