It is handy that you can easily recharge the battery of your electric car on a longer journey. You can do that with a fast charger, but what does fast charging cost, for example along the highway?
At a certain point the battery is empty and you have to recharge it to get to your destination. You don’t always want to free up a lot of time for that. Then a fast charger offers a solution. You often find them along the highways. Obviously, speed has a price. And that also applies to a fast charger. AutoWeek figured it out: what does fast charging for an electric car cost and what options are there? There appear to be several possibilities, of which we will mention a number of large and well-known ones.
Tesla: sometimes fast charging costs nothing
Tesla drivers can be big fans because the use of the Tesla fast charging network (Tesla Superchargers) is free in a number of cases. In that case, this usually has to be agreed upon when purchasing the car. If not, Tesla charges about 0.24 euros per kWh for a Supercharger. You can find a Tesla Supercharger at a dealer, but also at many roadside restaurants and hotels. The network is being expanded. Cars other than Teslas can also go to many Tesla Superchargers. You must use the Tesla app and create an account for it. And your car must be able to handle the (shorter) charging cable, which is located at the rear left of a Tesla. Fast charging then costs €0.68 per kWh. You can also take out a subscription for €12.88 per month, then charge for €0.29 per kWh. That is quite attractive for mile-eaters.
Fastned: with or without a subscription
The fast charging at Fastned is also known to many drivers of electric cars. There are more and more charging stations where you can go with your car. There are two rates. Without a subscription you pay 0.69 euros per kWh. If you take out a subscription of 11.99 euros, you pay 0.45 euros per kWh. If you fast charge more than 50 kWh per month, the subscription is therefore more interesting.
Shell Recharge: extras at Shell station
Shell is rolling out a network of fast chargers at well-known gas stations. They charge with a capacity of 175 kW. With the Shell Recharge charge card, fast charging costs 0.59 euros per kWh, plus a price per transaction of 0.35 euros per charge up to a maximum of 7 euros per month. With other fast chargers you pay 0.71 euros per kWh. And with the Shell Recharge app, there are various extras in the form of discounts or offers that may vary over time.
Allego: difference per location
Allego has several fast chargers in Europe, usually at a gas station, hotel or other facilities that are convenient. The prices for these charging stations vary per location and may also differ between card providers. On the Allego overview map In addition to the normal charging stations, you will also find the fast chargers with the gross prices as an indication.
It can differ with charge card
You may notice a difference if you quickly charge with a charge card. Agreements are made with the providers of the cards, so that you can still arrive at different amounts. And the rates of fast chargers are also different abroad. Look in our charging card selection aid for a comparison between different charging card providers.
