The Kia EV6 has been named Car of the Year 2022. It is the first time that Kia has won this prize. The Kia EV6 competed for first place with two other EVs, the Renault Mégane E-Tech Electric and group member Hyundai Ioniq 5.
In total, more than 60 models launched in 2021 were in the running for the title. At the end of last year, the 59-headed jury already crossed out a large number of cars, leaving a shortlist of seven nominees. Of those seven nominees, the Kia EV6 came out on top. The electric Kia scored 279 points, which is even more than last year’s winner: in 2021 the Toyota Yaris scored 266 points.
With that score, the EV6 was ahead of the Renault Mégane E-Tech Electric and the Hyundai Ioniq 5 on the podium, taking 265 and 261 points respectively. The EV6 and the Ioniq 5 are both on the E-GMP platform, but the jury found that the Kia mainly drove better than the Hyundai. Remarkably enough, the list mainly consists of EVs. The Peugeot 308 is the only car on the shortlist to have an internal combustion engine under the hood. The entire scoreboard looks like this:
Car | Score |
Kia EV6 | 279 |
Renault Megane E-Tech Electric | 265 |
Hyundai Ioniq 5 | 261 |
Peugeot 308 | 191 |
Skoda Enyaq iV | 185 |
Ford Mustang Mach-e | 150 |
Cupra Born | 144 |
AutoWeek has already pitted a number of candidates from the shortlist against each other. In this trio test, the EV6 had to compete against the Skoda Enyaq iV and the Polestar 2. Apart from that, the Skoda clashed with the Kia in a double test. Only interested in the Kia EV6? The electric Korean has also been put to the test.
It is not the first time that the EV6 has been awarded. The car previously won the title of ‘Electric Car of the Year’.
