The streaming service Netflix currently only offers subscriptions that are ad-free. So they don’t have a cheaper subscription that does contain advertising. Netflix says that they have no plans for this at the moment, but that it is not ruled out in the future.
Cheaper subscription
At the moment you can choose between three subscriptions if you want to purchase Netflix. However, the basic, standard, and premium plan are all ad-free. Those kinds of subscriptions will always be more expensive than those with advertising. Netflix told Reuters that they are not currently in the process of creating a cheaper plan that includes advertising. They did add that such an option may appear in the future.
Netflix has wanted their platform to remain ad-free since the beginning. Financial director Spencer Neumann says the company won’t change their stance anytime soon. “But never say never,” he adds.
More profit thanks to advertising
Stock market analysts have been advising the video service for some time to offer a cheaper subscription with advertising. That way they would make more profit than they do now. Recent figures show that Netflix is attracting fewer new customers than before. Netflix shares also fell nearly 40 percent this year.
Unlike Netflix, other streaming services have jumped on the advertising cart. Disney+ will add a cheaper plan to their offering next year. This plan will include commercials that run during the movies and series. Videoland also has a subscription with advertisements. That subscription costs half as much as the Premium subscription without advertising.
Netflix is not religiously against ads. Of course we can’t ignore what others are doing, but it’s of no use to us right now. Netflix’s current policy is aimed at people who want to watch movies and series without advertising.
