It looks like fans of Apple’s most popular basic tablet will still have to be patient. Although many expected the launch of the 12th generation entry-level iPad this spring, things have remained remarkably quiet around this affordable model. Well-known analysts, including Bloomberg’s Mark Gurmanhave now adjusted their expectations and indicate that the introduction of the iPad 12 will not take place until the beginning of 2027.
For many users, the standard iPad is the perfect choice for study, entertainment or everyday use at home. This delay is therefore annoying for those who were planning to replace their current tablet.
Why the iPad 12 is taking a long time
The main reason for the delay is the rollout of Apple Intelligence. Apple wants to make its latest AI functionalities widely accessible across its entire lineup, but the current basic model simply lacks the hardware for this. To make Apple Intelligence run smoothly on the iPad 12, more powerful hardware is needed, including more RAM.
Currently, the technology industry is facing a significant shortage of RAM and chips, which may be the cause of the delay of the new iPad. Furthermore, Apple may be considering using a different processor than initially planned.
A19 chip
It was previously thought that the standard iPad would have an A18 chip, but several sources now report that Apple has opted for the newer A19 chip, which can also be found in the iPhone 17.
AI functions require at least 8 GB of working memory (RAM). Fortunately, the A19 chip supports Apple Intelligence in the standard iPad. Both the A18 and A19 are equipped with 8 GB of RAM. The current iPad with the A16 chip only has 6 GB of RAM, so it does not support Apple Intelligence.
New in an old guise
While the appearance of the entry-level iPad will likely remain unchanged, the biggest changes will be in the internal components. The twelfth generation iPad may have a new processor with Apple Intelligence, as well as standard 128 GB of storage capacity and an N1 network chip that supports Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6. Furthermore, the iPad is expected to retain its sleek design with an 11-inch Liquid Retina display and Touch ID.
iPad 12 is expected in 2027
Apple likes to link the introduction of new basic hardware to major software updates. The launch of the iPad 12 could be coordinated with a major update to iPadOS, for example iPadOS 27.4. This fall, Apple may have other plans regarding the iPad, such as an iPad mini with an OLED screen and new Macs.
