More maintenance moments for EV, but lower amount

The electric car will beat the combustion engine in 2021 when it comes to average maintenance costs. The Bovag and RAI Association concluded this in the consumer survey ‘Aftersales Monitor’, which was conducted in collaboration with Multiscope. An electric car is usually a little more often at the garage, but the bills are a lot less peppery.
The research shows that owners of a car with a combustion engine in 2021 on average lost a total of €548 in maintenance costs. With an electric car, this amount turned out to be a lot lower with an average of €340. An EV owner usually spends €193 per maintenance moment, the average maintenance for a car with a combustion engine results in an amount of €317 on the invoice. On the other hand, the number of average maintenance moments with an EV is slightly higher than with a traditional car. An EV was on average 1.76 times at the garage, a car with a combustion engine 1.73 times.
According to Bovag, the reason that EVs are parked at the garage a little more often is the fact that EVs are relatively young and are often driven for business purposes, which means that they ‘go to the garage more often than average for a summer-winter tire change’. This is the reason for a garage visit in 10 percent of cases for cars up to four years old, from 4 years that percentage is about half. Overall, the main reason for a garage visit is ‘MOT + service’ with 28 percent, followed by ‘maintenance’ with 19 percent and ‘interim repair’ with 17 percent. In total, turnover from maintenance in the car industry amounted to €3.67 billion. Only $80 million of that amount came from EVs.
