Big engine, yet cleaner
Stellantis presents the Hurricane, an all-new twin-turbo six-cylinder inline petrol engine. In European eyes that may be a rather remarkable step, but for the Americans this block is a major step in the ‘cleaning’ of the vehicle fleet.
According to its makers, the six-cylinder engine, which already surfaced in 2019, delivers the power and performance of a V8, but with up to 15 percent less consumption and emissions. The Hurricane has two turbos, a displacement of 3.0 liters and basically delivers ‘more than’ 400 American horsepower and 610 Nm. In European horsepower, this is more than 405 hp. In addition to the ‘Standard Output’ version, there is also a High Output variant, with more than 500 hp and a torque of at least 644 Nm.
While the Hurricane engine is brand new in its own right, it does share many parts with the 2.0-litre four-cylinder already used in many Jeep models. The new three-liter is suitable for cars on the STLA Large and STLA Frame platform, the two largest platforms of the quartet that was presented in mid-2021. Do not expect an Alfa with this block on board for the time being, because in practice this probably means that we will mainly find it in rear-wheel drive models from Jeep, Dodge and Ram. These are cars that are now often equipped with a Hemi-V8 with a positively disturbed amount of power. Those engines are not directly referred to the output, but the fact that the Hurricane is built in the factory where the time-honored Hemi is also made is telling.
“While Stellantis has major electrification plans, with a 50 percent share of all-electric cars by 2030, the internal combustion engine will continue to play a key role in our portfolio in the coming years,” Stellantis answers the questions that may be on your lips right now.
As a concept, the six-cylinder in-line is undergoing a nice revival. Not so long ago, this engine type was mainly the domain of BMW, but since 2014 Mercedes is also participating again. Mazda recently joined this group with the arrival of the rear-wheel drive CX-60.
