After the launch of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 in December, Qualcomm has now announced a new processor: Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1. This plus variant is not manufactured by Samsung, but by TSMC. In addition, the midrange processor Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 has also been announced.
Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1
Qualcomm has followed the same pattern for years when it comes to chips: every year a new processor is announced, but six months after that there is always a Plus version of that previously released chip. Now the company has announced the Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 and the midrange variant Snapdragon 7 Plus Gen 1. In both processors, the processor (the cpu) and the graphics computing unit (the gpu) have been improved compared to their predecessor. This makes them work more efficiently and you should notice that when using a device.
TSMC makes the 4nm chip, which is a change with Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. That processor came from Samsung factory. Striking, because this is a plus variant, so a processor that is directly based on its predecessor. Strange to choose another manufacturer in the middle of that timeline. Qualcomm says nothing about that, however. There could be many reasons for this, including simply being able to get a better deal with TSMC or something in the supply of raw materials.
In any case, it is a big step forward as far as the processor is concerned. According to Qualcomm, Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 has an improved efficiency of 30 percent on both the gpu and the cpu. That is not only nice for the functioning of the part, but also for the battery life. You could play an hour longer with it, stream video for 80 minutes longer, and make calls for 5.5 hours longer. That’s a long conversation. This is also good news for music lovers: you could sometimes listen to music for up to 17 hours longer than with the company’s previous processor.
Qualcomm
The clock speed is 10 percent higher than the predecessor and the same applies to the GPU. Qualcomm also believes its new flagship product will provide a 20 percent increase in performance per watt and a 15 percent decrease in the power required by the SoC. That’s it though: the chip still looks the same and has the same Adreno 730 GPU and a Snapdragon X65 modem on board. Exactly like its predecessor. We do have to wait a little longer before we can experience all this in a smartphone. Fortunately not for long: AndroidAuthority writes that the first phone with this system-on-a-chip is expected in the third quarter of 2022.
Snapdragon 7 Gen 1
About the other new announcement, Snapdragon 7 Gen 1, we can be a little shorter. Firstly, it is the first chip within the Snapdragon 700 series to bear the name ‘Gen’. Furthermore, Qualcomm indicates that this octa-core chip has a main core at 2.4 GHz, three performance cores at 2.36 GHz and four efficiency cores at 1.8 GHz. Which Adreno GPU is used is also unknown, but the power would have increased by 20 percent compared to the Snapdragon 778G. Machine learning performance has also increased by 30 percent.
You can also count on QHD+ display support at 60Hz, 200p camera support (via the 14-bit ISP) and Quick Charge 4 Plus for fast charging. It uses a Snapdragon X62 5G modem, Bluetooth 5.3 and Wi-Fi 6E. Curious? Phones with the chip are expected this quarter. Anyway, Oppo. Honor and Xiaomi are going to use it.
