Sales of EVs up sharply in the Netherlands

The decline in overall Dutch car sales in the first half of 2022 is in any case not due to electric cars. This is evident from figures from the RAI Association, Bovag and RDC. A total of 29,531 EVs have been registered this year through June, an increase of no less than 82.9 percent compared to the same period in 2021.

That number means that almost one in five new cars sold in the Netherlands in the first six months of 2022 was an EV. To be precise, the share of electric in new sales in that period was 19.2 percent. That is almost 10 percentage points higher than last year, when that market share stood at 9.9 percent after the first half of the year. According to the trade associations, the increase is partly because extra budget was made available for the private purchase subsidy. They also believe that the introduction of more affordable electric cars is contributing to the increasing sales figure.

Not all of the EVs sold in the past six months go to the business market. In fact, 47.81 percent of those cars, including private lease, came into private hands. In the first half of 2021, the share of private sales was only 26.3 percent. Private individuals who are in the market for a new EV might do well to wait until 2023. The subsidy pot for this year is already empty. Next year, as a private individual, you can receive an allowance of €2,950 when purchasing a new electric car. That amount has been slightly lowered, because this year the amount of the subsidy was still €3,350.

In addition to EVs, Dutch consumers are also increasingly opting for a new hybrid or plug-in hybrid car. In the first half of 2021, a total of 18,731 PHEVs were registered, an increase of 17.6 percent compared to 2021. The number of newly registered hybrids increased by 24 percent to 16,648 copies.

The most popular electric cars

In the Netherlands, the Peugeot e-208 is currently very popular. In June Peugeot sold according to Kentekenradar.nl for example, 575 copies of the electric 208. In the same month, the Citroën ë-C4 took second place with 572 copies, followed by the Skoda Enyaq (406), Peugeot 2008 (369) and the Tesla Model Y (331).
