Just a little patience

Like sister brand Kia, Hyundai is also working on an ‘affordable’ electric car. That is what the head of Hyundai’s European marketing department told Automotive News.
Andreas-Christoph Hofmann, head of the marketing department at Hyundai Motor Europe, told Automotive News that Hyundai is working on an electric entry-level model. Earlier this year, the sister brand Kia already indicated that it was working on a smaller and cheaper electric car.
However, do not expect Hyundai to present the canvas of its electric entry-level vehicle within a few months. According to Hofmann, the development of a compact electric car takes quite some effort. In addition, according to Hofmann, it is quite a challenge to make a compact EV profitable because of the smaller profit margins on cars in the lower segments.
Whether Hyundai is working on a small electric ‘city car’ such as cars like the Dacia Spring, or whether it will go for a size larger, is not yet entirely clear. According to Hofmann, the target price for a compact electric car should be around €20,000. Volkswagen, Cupra and Skoda will also eventually come with an ‘affordable’ electric car. For their upcoming compact EVs, the brands gave a target price of between €20,000 and €25,000. The Volkswagen Group is all about compact crossovers. We aim for the electric loafers, which have now been announced by both Hyundai and Kia, to be of comparable size.
Hyundai reported in March this year that it will present 11 new electric models before 2030, 6 of which are for its luxury brand Genesis. Kia shed light on its equally fanatical EV plans in the same month.
