e-Power: always electric, no EV
Soon Nissan will bring the completely new X-Trail to Europe and therefore also to the Netherlands. In its home country of Japan, Nissan has now presented the X-Trail, complete with the e-Power powertrain that will also have a place in the SUV in Europe.
Anyone who now walks into Nissan’s showroom will see its bigger brother, the X-Trail, next to the Qashqai. That Nissan X-Trail already appeared on the Dutch market in 2014, while its smaller brother Qashqai with the introduction year 2021 is a lot younger. Of course Nissan is aware of that too. This summer it will bring a completely new X-Trail to our country. The new X-Trail has now been shown to the public in Japan. Nissan immediately hangs an e-Power powertrain in the SUV, which makes it possible that the X-Trail is electrically powered, but is not an EV.
First the X-Trail itself. That is because it is less new than you think. As early as 2020, the model was marketed in the United States as Rogue. Later we were able to show it to you as an X-Trail for the first time thanks to a series of photos surfaced by AutoWeek in China, although shortly afterwards Nissan pulled the curtain on that car in China. In the United States, Nissan supplies the Rogue with a 204 hp 2.5 four-cylinder engine and in China there is a 204 hp 1.5 on the engine list. It is not yet entirely clear what the Dutch delivery range of the new X-Trail will look like, although we expect that the engine range reasonably corresponds to that of the Qashqai. It is certain that the Nissan X-Trail in the Netherlands will also receive the e-Power drivetrain.
The Nissan Qashqai is not only available with 140 hp and 158 hp mild-hybrid 1.3s, but also as an e-Power. The Qashqai e-Power has a 190 hp and 330 Nm strong electric motor that drives the front wheels. On board is a 158 hp 1.5 three-cylinder engine – with variable compression – which is responsible for the energy that the petrol engine transmits via a 2 kWh battery. The Qashqai e-Power therefore drives like an EV, but is not. The X-Trail e-Power comes in Japan with front-wheel drive, but unlike the Qashqai also with e-4orce four-wheel drive on the market.
More power
In the Japanese X-Trail e-Power with front-wheel drive is a 143 hp 1.5 three-cylinder and the electric motor is 204 hp and 330 Nm. Less power for the 1.5, but more power for the electric motor. The four-wheel drive variant has the same powertrain on the front axle, but also has a 136 hp and 195 Nm powerful electric motor on the rear axle. Whether the specifications of the European X-Trail e-Power match those of the Japanese version remains to be seen.
The new X-Trail – of which a luxuriously decked Autech version is also available in Japan (photos 39 to 41) – is 4.66 meters long and has a wheelbase of 2.71 meters. It shares its CMF-CD platform with the Qashqai, although the X-Trail is on the longer variant that is also under the new Mitsubishi Outlander. In its home country of Japan, Nissan introduced the e-Power powertrain in 2016 in the Note and Serena, among others.
