Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra: a 200 megapixel photo sensor to dominate the competition

Samsung develops 200 megapixel photo sensors used by other smartphone manufacturers. But the Korean brand would keep a new sensor for its future Galaxy S23 Ultra.

Samsung’s future 200 megapixel photo sensor would be reserved, at least initially, for its Galaxy S23 Ultra. The Korean manufacturer intends to hit hard with a third generation sensor.

Samsung is not at its first 200 megapixel sensor

In September 2021, Samsung announced its 200 megapixel ISOCELL HP1 photo sensor. The first smartphone to be equipped with it will be released soon, and it is not a phone from the Korean manufacturer. It is the Motorola Edge X30, soon to be launched in China, which will benefit from this. We may see it arrive in our country as the Motorola Edge 30 Ultra.

The sensor in question makes it possible to produce 50 megapixel photos, by grouping 4 pixels into 1 thanks to the pixel binning process, or 12.5 megapixel shots by grouping 16 pixels into 1. This process, called Tetra2pixel at Samsung, allows to obtain brighter photos for better rendering in the dark.

A first photo taken by the HP1 sensor of the Motorola Edge X30 has been published on the web. The snapshot, taken in what we imagine to be ideal conditions, is extremely detailed and gives a first glimpse of the sensor’s capabilities.

But just nine months after introducing the HP1, in June 2022 Samsung announced its new ISOCELL HP3 sensor. On this new sensor, Samsung promises to reduce the size by 20% while significantly improving the quality. If we do not yet know which smartphone will benefit from it first, it would not be the Galaxy S23 Ultra.

A new sensor for the Galaxy S23 Ultra

According to Ice universe, an always well-informed “leaker”, the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra will be well equipped with a 200 megapixel sensor, but the latter has not yet been announced by the Korean manufacturer. It would be a leap forward from the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra which is equipped with a 108-megapixel sensor.

Samsung Galaxy’s have long been renowned for the quality of the photos they are capable of capturing. But the competition is fierce in this field. We think in particular of the Xiaomi 12S Ultra, Google Pixel 6 Pro or iPhone 13 Pro Max which take excellent photos.

In addition to this unique 200 megapixel sensor, the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra could skip an Exynos processor and favor the Snapdragon 8+ Gen2. A 40-megapixel selfie camera has also been mooted. Like its predecessor, the Galaxy S23 Ultra should put the package on the photo.
