Big crowds expected

ANWB warns for ‘last black Saturday’

Summer vacation is in full swing. Although August has only just started, the ANWB expects that next Saturday will culminate in the last ‘black Saturday’ of this season. Huge crowds are expected on several popular holiday routes.

It will be very busy on European roads again next weekend. The ANWB expects millions of holidaymakers to leave for their holiday destination or, on the contrary, to travel home. To avoid the biggest crowds, it is best to leave on Saturday after 10 a.m. from the Netherlands or to set off on Sunday, the ANWB reports.

Holiday countries

France, one of the most popular countries for a car holiday, is likely to get very busy. The French traffic police expect extremely long traffic jams in the southeast of the country on Saturday, around noon it would be more than 800 kilometers of traffic jams. It will also be very busy in Germany on Friday afternoon and Saturday due to recurring holiday traffic. A lot of traffic is expected on the routes to Croatia, but also in the north of the country between Hamburg and the Danish border.

In Austria, holidaymakers on the A10/A11 Salzburg-Villach-Slovenia will experience a lot of delay on Saturday. Friday and Saturday it will be in Switzerland “as usual connect for the Gotthardtunnel to the A2”, according to the ANWB. On Saturday, the waiting time in both directions will increase to more than two hours. Italy is also expected to be very busy on the main roads on Saturday. Travelers should count on two hours extra travel time on the A22 Brennero-Verona near Trento.

The Netherlands

In the Netherlands, work causes delays, among other things. The A50 from Arnhem to Apeldoorn will be closed until 22 August between the Waterberg and Beekbergen interchanges. There is also the Sneekweek and the skûtsjesilen on the Frisian lakes. Due to the Canal Parade it will be extra busy in Amsterdam on Saturday and the Solar Weekend will take place on the Maasplassen in Roermond.
