BMW kicks off EV offensive ‘Neue Klasse’ with two models

Under the name ‘Neue Klasse’, fully electric BMWs will appear from 2025 on a scalable platform that is purely intended for EVs. It was already known that it starts with a 3-series-like. However, a ‘sporty SUV’ will also be added from the start.

While BMW currently uses a wide range of different drive types for various models, BMW will also focus more on purely electric models in the near future. It does this with a new scalable platform, on which cars appear that it classifies under the name ‘Neue Klasse’. It dedicated EV platform debuts with a ‘car in the 3-series segment’, it was already announced in May. He immediately turns out to have a brother.

In 2025, the starting signal will be given with a compact electric sedan (possibly i3) and BMW will also push a fully electric sporty SUV forward. CEO Oliver Zipse announced this at the presentation of the latest quarterly figures. Zipse hasn’t released more details about these newcomers yet. However, he has high expectations of the Neue Klasse: “By the end of this decade, the Neue Klasse will account for half of our sales.” BMW is focusing on cheaper batteries for this, among other things.

BMW currently has a sporty electric SUV in its range with the iX M60, but the newcomer will probably be a size smaller. The compact electric sedan will undoubtedly compete with the Tesla Model 3, but also with the still shrouded electric alternatives from Mercedes-Benz and Audi for the C-Class and A4 respectively. A car that the middle segment by then still shares with the i4, but will probably also gradually take over.
